I woke to the smell of stale sheets and ink. My room lay dark, and I couldn’t think what had woken me. Blinking against the gloom, the shape of my bed and the pale moonlight outlining the window came into focus. There had been a sound, or a feeling.

I rolled onto my back. The draft from the window blew my skin cold.

A glint of eyeshine made my heart ricochet against my ribs. I angled up on my elbows, scrabbling for a light. Yes, in the corner, something was looking at me.

A shadow, dark even against the night in my room, stained the corner, then leaked closer, larger. At the top were two eyes, now palely glaring.

I froze as it neared the bed. Blood pulsed in my ears. Layers of darkness fell from it like sheets of gossamer, revealing the figure beneath. I clutched the blankets so hard my fists trembled. I knew what I would see. No, I knew who I would see.

The frosty air smelled of rosemary perfume. I wanted to speak, to do something that would change the expression on the phantom’s face, which now showed through the ghostly black. She gazed, otherworldly, with accusation and concern. I don’t know how she managed to convey both emotions. As before, she wore a nightdress and her hair flowed freely about her shoulders as though she were underwater. Blue tinged her form, and pale light emanated from her.

She didn’t speak, but we stared at one another, both unbreathing, for a long time, and I understood. I had to make something right. I couldn’t fix Denmark, I couldn’t fix Hamlet, but one way or another, I could try to atone for my mother’s death.
